Shackleton

November 13, 2008

I never know what to call this kind of music. The bass lines and spacey clicks always want me to think dubstep but there’s always, at least with Shackleton, this ambient rhythm or some kind of bizarre theme. This track, released from the El Din single, gives me a good example I suppose. The bassline sneaks in with this kind of haunting melody, coming out of some Middle Eastern register or theme. That makes, sense, considering Din refers to the Arabic for “way of life” and “religion”. I get into this: Headphones on, music loud, the bass and the reverberating slaps hits and bangs. It has a organic sort of breathing quality to it.

Listening to Rap after Tha Carter III Came Out

October 7, 2008

The hard part about listening to rap after Tha Carter III came out is that you don’t get to wait for Tha Carter III to come out. Because for like a year all I did was download Lil Wayne mixtapes and try to guess what would make the album. It got really bad I dreamed about making “Zoo” the first single or something, and “Something You Forgot” was going to be my favorite song. The fact he recycled that kitchen verse on “Playing With Fire” was like my crowning achievement as a Lil Wayne fan.

Do you see the effect this man has on me? I can’t write straight, that made so little sense.

What I mean about it’s hard listening to rap after Tha Carter III came out is I’ll look forward to something maybe a little, and then I’ll do the internet rounds two weeks before it’s release date and I’ll have it. I guess there were a couple fake Paper Trails but it took for-e-ver for Carter III to come out. And it wasn’t like “Oh man David Banner got postponed he’s my favorite dude” it was like “Shit I just wasted February.”

And the other thing is I half didn’t believe it would ever be released. I had this theory that Carter III was supposed to be a posthumous album, and that he was going to release mixtapes until he OD’d and then they would release it. So my anticipation wasn’t even that the album was coming out, I really thought Life After Death was about to happen.

But really the hardest part, and it’s sort of a combination of all this, is that he’s hibernating. His pre-Carter output was ridiculous, like 2 weeks between mixtapes. That’s the unexplainable part of my Weezy obsession, because it’s like what was I even waiting for there were new verses bi-weekly. He didn’t abstain for a year and bust a huge nut, this guy was in the proverbial studio bed nightly. So when the album finally came out sure there were a few surprises, but it was the exact same Lil Wayne I’d been listening to every day for a year and a half, just less gunshots. Where’s the new tapes I’m so lonely.

I don’t know what there is to look forward to anymore. PRGz just got a release date, so that’s only a matter of time. I’m so bored. Like I’m listening to Deep House and watching Jumpstyle videos and yeah there’s that feeling of discovery but it isn’t like Germany’s going to accidentally drink too much cough syrup and all I’ll have is the bootleg.

josé gonzález - down the line (zshare)

it turns out he’s based on a short graphic novel by jim woodring called manhog beyond the face. you can read the whole thing here, its kind of trippy. in fact, the gonzález video for “killing for love” is a live action recreation of the comic:

the shepherd’s dog is really quite good. i’ve deciding to admit that i’m just a vag and admit i like iron & wine. a lot.

iron & wine - carousel (zshare)
not the best song on the album, but the muted out, filtered vocals remind me of his early bathroom recording stuff. its almost psychedelic…

i’m sure the whole album will be zshared to death, so you can probably find more elsewhere. and it was on the itunes store main page so buy it too assholes. the cover arts great too so whuts good borders or best buy or whatetever
