I love when guitars sound like this. The song starts and you know it’s going to be good, and they let it go for a bit to get you really excited for when he starts singing. It’s a great lying in bed song, probably the waking up part or falling asleep if you’re feeling really good.

I never know what to call this kind of music. The bass lines and spacey clicks always want me to think dubstep but there’s always, at least with Shackleton, this ambient rhythm or some kind of bizarre theme. This track, released from the El Din single, gives me a good example I suppose. The bassline sneaks in with this kind of haunting melody, coming out of some Middle Eastern register or theme. That makes, sense, considering Din refers to the Arabic for “way of life” and “religion”. I get into this: Headphones on, music loud, the bass and the reverberating slaps hits and bangs. It has a organic sort of breathing quality to it.

Geto Boys - What? (click to download)

Every couple months (days) I open up iTunes and put on Josephine Foster or something and see my reflection in the screen and I’m like WHAT ARE YOU DOOOOING!!! And I go into this trance and listen to Geto Boys and Project Pat for a couple hours (8:30am to 11:30 for example) and feel better.

The song is from a different CD, but that cover is the best.

There’s something glamorous about this song. I haven’t read much about the band but I think they involve David Bowie and French starlets, but they have a really vague website and I think the starlet thing was exaggerated. The picture is the singer, but I like the song.

Little Joy - The Next Time Around (click to download)

I’m not calling Vampire Weekend yet but don’t forget who called Vampire Weekend, especially the misses you know you love this stuff. It’s the drummer from the Strokes, some Brazilian guy who is friends with Devendra Banhart, and that guy’s girlfriend.

Highly recommended, they sound like a 50s Hawaiian Strokes.
